Glucose is a type of sugar in our blood that our body uses for energy. Sometimes, the amount of glucose in the blood can be too high, which is called hyperglycemia, or too low, which is called hypoglycemia. Doctors check the glucose levels in the blood to help find and treat different health problems that affect how our body handles sugar.
These problems include diabetes mellitus, which is when the body can’t properly use glucose because of issues with a hormone called insulin. Another problem could be idiopathic hypoglycemia, where the blood sugar drops too low for reasons that doctors can’t find easily. There’s also a condition called pancreatic islet cell neoplasm, where tumors in the pancreas affect how it helps regulate glucose levels.
