Ferritin Test

Ferritin is a special protein in our bodies that holds onto iron and releases it when needed. Doctors check the amount of ferritin in the blood to learn about different blood conditions. When someone doesn’t have enough iron in their body, a condition called iron deficiency anemia, their ferritin levels are low because there isn’t much iron to store. On the other hand, if there’s too much iron in someone’s body, a condition known as iron overload, the ferritin levels are high because there’s a lot of iron stored. This test helps doctors figure out if a person has too little or too much iron, which can affect their health.
